Frequently asked questions

General

How often should I have an eye exam?

A complete eye exam every year is recommended for adults over 40 to preventively rule out glaucoma, cataracts or retinal problems. For patients with diabetes or high blood pressure, this yearly exam is essential.

What aftercare do I need following eye surgery?

Do not rub the operated eye, apply the prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops, avoid heavy physical effort or swimming during the first weeks, and keep your post-operative follow-up appointments.

Do you work with medical insurance?

We work on a reimbursement basis with most major medical insurers for scheduled surgeries. We provide all medical reports and the corresponding forms, properly completed, for your claim.

Where is the office and how do I get there?

At Av. Tecnológico, Edificio Océanos, SM 503, Mz 12, Lt 5, Local 2, inside Óptica EOX, in Cancún. You will find the map and directions on the contact page.

Do you see eye emergencies?

Yes. Blows to the eye, foreign bodies, a painful red eye or sudden vision loss are evaluated the same day during clinic hours. Message us on WhatsApp noting that it is an emergency.

Cataract Surgery

Does cataract surgery hurt?

No. It is performed with eye-drop local anesthesia and light sedation if needed. During the procedure you will only perceive lights and water; you will not feel pain.

How much does cataract surgery cost in Cancún?

The cost depends on the type of intraocular lens your eye requires. You will receive a clear, written quote at your evaluation visit, with no surprises. Cataract surgery in Cancún typically costs a fraction of US prices, with premium imported lenses. We work on a reimbursement basis with major medical insurers.

How long do I need to stay in Cancún after surgery?

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure. A follow-up visit is done within the first days; most international patients plan a stay of about one week. Dr. Flores will give you a personalized plan.

Are both eyes operated at the same time?

For safety, one eye is operated first and, once good healing is confirmed (usually 1–2 weeks), the second eye is scheduled.

Pterygium Surgery

Does the pterygium grow back after surgery?

With the simple technique (just removing the tissue) recurrence is high. That is why Dr. Flores uses a conjunctival autograft, which lowers recurrence to under 5%. You will also receive aftercare guidance (lubricants and UV-protection lenses) to protect the result.

Is pterygium surgery painful?

No. It is performed with eye-drop local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes. In the first 24–48 hours you may feel grittiness or a watery eye, controllable with prescribed pain relief.

When can I fly home after surgery?

Most patients resume office-type activities in 2–4 days. A follow-up visit is done within the first days; Dr. Flores will confirm a travel-friendly plan at your evaluation, including UV eye protection for sun and wind.

Glaucoma Care

Is there a cure for glaucoma?

There is no cure, but it can be controlled. Caught early, treatment halts or slows the damage to the optic nerve and preserves vision. What is already lost cannot be recovered, which is why early diagnosis is the priority.

Who is at higher risk of glaucoma?

People over 40, anyone with a close relative who has glaucoma, patients with diabetes or high myopia, and long-term corticosteroid users. In these cases a yearly exam is essential.

How do I know if my eye pressure is high?

You cannot feel it. The only way to know is to have it measured at an eye exam with tonometry — a quick, painless test that is part of the comprehensive evaluation.

Diabetic Retinopathy

I have diabetes but I see fine — do I really need a retina exam?

Yes. Diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms in its early stages, which is exactly when it responds best to treatment. A yearly retina exam is part of standard diabetes care for everyone with the condition.

Does the retina exam hurt?

No. Drops are used to dilate the pupil, which cause a few hours of blurred vision and light sensitivity, so it is best to come with someone and not drive immediately afterward.

Does laser cure retinopathy?

Laser stops the damage from progressing and prevents bleeding; it does not reverse existing damage. That is why the emphasis is on early detection and good blood-sugar control.

Comprehensive Eye Exam

What is the difference between an optical store and an ophthalmologist?

An optical store fits glasses. A physician ophthalmologist also examines the full health of the eye — pressure, retina, cornea and optic nerve — and can diagnose and treat disease before it causes irreversible damage.

Do I need an appointment or do you see same-day patients?

We see patients by appointment so each one gets the time they need. Message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm the next available time; emergencies are evaluated the same day.

Will you give me a written quote?

Yes. You will receive a clear, written quote for the exam and any recommended treatment, with no surprises. We work on a reimbursement basis with major medical insurers.
