How much does an eye exam cost in Cancún and what does it include?

Patient during an eye exam with a slit lamp

Short answer: the first eye exam with Dr. Fabiola Flores in Cancún costs $1,000 MXN. The visit lasts about 40 to 60 minutes and covers both your prescription and the health of your eyes. If you need an additional specialized test, the doctor explains it before it is done.

What does the eye exam include?

The comprehensive eye exam includes:

  • Medical history and review of symptoms.
  • Visual acuity and prescription measurement.
  • Examination of the cornea, conjunctiva, lens and other front-of-eye structures.
  • Eye pressure measurement.
  • Retina evaluation when indicated.
  • A clear diagnosis explained without jargon.
  • Glasses prescription, treatment plan or follow-up, depending on the case.

Dr. Flores performs the exam herself. For patients with diabetes, people over 40, or anyone with suspected cataract, glaucoma or retinal disease, a medical evaluation can detect problems that a glasses prescription alone will not.

Does the price include every test?

The $1,000 MXN fee covers the full evaluation visit. Some cases need specialized tests such as visual field testing, ocular tomography or measurements to calculate an intraocular lens. These are not done automatically: the doctor tells you which are necessary and explains their cost beforehand.

If surgery is recommended, the price depends on the diagnosis, the technique and, for cataract, the type of intraocular lens. After the exam you receive guidance on next steps and a current written estimate.

What is the difference between an optical store check and an eye exam?

An optical store can measure the prescription for your glasses. An ophthalmologist also evaluates the health of the eye and can diagnose conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, pterygium or diabetic retinopathy.

See an ophthalmologist if you have blurred vision that does not improve with glasses, persistent pain or redness, a growth on the eye, new flashes or floaters, diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or if you are over 40 and have not had a recent exam. How to book and what to bring

The visit takes place at Av. Tecnológico, Edificio Océanos, inside Óptica EOX, in Cancún. Dr. Flores speaks English. To confirm availability, message us on WhatsApp at 998 601 8740.

Bring your current glasses, prescriptions or previous studies, and a list of your medications. Your pupils may be dilated; if so, vision will be blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours, so it is best to come accompanied and avoid driving right afterwards.
