When should you see an ophthalmologist in Cancún? 8 signs you shouldn’t ignore
Short answer: see an ophthalmologist if you have blurred vision that does not improve with glasses, a persistent red eye, a visible growth on the eye, new flashes or “floaters,” eye pain, diabetes, or if you are over 40 and have gone more than a year without a medical eye exam.
An optical store is not the same as ophthalmology
An optical store fits glasses. A physician ophthalmologist examines the full health of the eye: eye pressure, retina, cornea and optic nerve, and can diagnose and treat disease before it causes irreversible damage. Many serious eye diseases — such as glaucoma — cause no symptoms until the damage is advanced.
8 signs it’s time to book an exam
- Blurry or cloudy vision that does not improve when you change glasses — it could be a cataract.
- A visible growth spreading over the eye — pterygium, very common in the Caribbean climate.
- A frequently red, irritated eye, especially with sun and wind.
- New flashes of light or “floaters” — these can signal a retinal problem and are an emergency.
- Halos around lights at night.
- Headaches when reading or using screens.
- You live with diabetes — a yearly retina exam is essential even if you see well.
- You are over 40 and have not had an exam in the past year.
The yearly exam: your best vision insurance
After age 40, a yearly eye exam allows early detection of cataract, glaucoma and retinal problems, while they still have a simple solution. The complete exam takes 40 to 60 minutes and is performed directly by the doctor.
